SENSORY TOYS

Sensory toys support both children and adults on the autism spectrum by helping with self-regulation, focus, and emotional control. Many individuals experience sensory sensitivities, and sensory tools provide calming or alerting input that helps the body feel more organized. These tools can reduce anxiety, improve attention, support transitions, and increase independence at home, school, work, and in the community. When used intentionally, sensory toys are not just for play—they are effective tools that support learning and daily functioning.

Building Independence at Home: Everyday Tools That Help Kids Learn Life Skills

At Hopeful Horizons ABA, we focus on teaching real-world skills that help children become more independent in their daily routines. Many of the independent living skills we work on at our center—such as dressing, cleaning, organizing, and following routines—can also be practiced at home using simple, supportive tools.

The items shared here are tools we commonly use during therapy sessions and recommend to families to help reinforce skills in a familiar environment. These tools support task completion, increase confidence, and help children practice independence in meaningful ways.

Using these items at home can help children:

  • Build independence in daily routines

  • Improve functional and fine motor skills

  • Follow step-by-step directions

  • Generalize skills learned in therapy

Consistent practice at home helps children make stronger progress and feel more confident in their everyday lives.
